Underwater welding and cutting

We weld shell plating, anodes and pipeline spool pieces and cut metal underwater. On ships, pipelines and hydraulic structures, with no dry dock for the ship.

Underwater welding lets a ship, a pipeline or a structure be repaired where it stands: the ship stays out of dry dock, the pipe stays on the bottom. We do underwater welding under a declaration registered with the State Labour Service, and the Shipping Register of Ukraine recognises our afloat ship repair with underwater welding and cutting.

Welding on ships

We repair the underwater hull afloat: shell plating, anodes, sea valves.

  • Welding shell plating 5 to 30 mm thick.
  • Cofferdams to replace segments of shell plating afloat.
  • Fitting and replacing anodes on the hull and on the propeller and rudder.
  • Cutting out damaged areas before the repair.

Pipelines and structures

We replace sections of subsea pipelines and work on the steel of hydraulic structures.

  • Fitting pipeline spool pieces.
  • All kinds of underwater welding and metal cutting on the route.
  • Defect surveys of steel structures and pipelines before the repair.
  • Ultrasonic gauging of the remaining steel thickness.

Underwater metal cutting

Cutting metal underwater is part of repair and of dismantling alike. The method is chosen for the steel, its thickness and the depth.

  • Electric arc, oxy-arc, exothermic and gas cutting of metal.
  • Abrasive cutting with an 80 kW diamond wire and discs.
  • Hydraulic tools on HYKON power packs.
  • Cutting reinforced concrete structures.

Approval and safety

Underwater welding is high-risk work, so every step of it is on paper.

  • Declaration of conformity of our facilities for diving work and open-flame welding, registered with the State Labour Service.
  • Certificate of the Shipping Register of Ukraine on the conformity of the company for afloat ship repair with underwater welding and cutting.
  • ISO 9001:2015 certificate, underwater welding and cutting within its scope.
  • Dives deeper than 12 m under a certified diving physician, our own hyperbaric chambers from 1 MPa.

Can shell plating be welded without a dry dock?

Yes. We weld shell plating 5 to 30 mm thick, fit cofferdams to replace segments of plating and replace anodes, all afloat. More on Ship servicing.

How do you cut metal underwater?

By electric arc, oxy-arc, exothermic and gas cutting, and large structures with an 80 kW diamond wire. Reinforced concrete we cut underwater too.

Are you approved for underwater welding?

Yes. We do diving and welding work under a declaration of conformity registered with the State Labour Service, and the Shipping Register of Ukraine recognises our ship repair with underwater welding. The documents are on Certificates and permits.

How deep do you work?

Dives deeper than 12 m go under a certified diving physician, and for them the company has its own hyperbaric chambers rated from 1 MPa.
